Our warmest congratulations to the newlyweds! Now, it’s time to play the name game.
If you choose to change your name after marriage, you can either assume your spouse’s last name or add their name to yours with a space or a hyphen — the order of the last names is entirely up to you. In Alberta, a legal name change is not required; just your marriage certificate and proper identification. Visit the Government of Alberta’s website for more information.
All your identification should reflect your new last name. This is where it gets a little tricky, as you’ll need to contact each company or organization and ask what they require to make the change. For instance, some will want to see your marriage certificate for verification purposes, which you can order at any AMA centre.
The list below shows you some of the items you may need to update with your new last name.
We can help with your:
- AMA membership
- Licence and vehicle registration
- Alberta Health Care
- AMA Insurance (home, auto, health)
- Driver’s licence
Don’t forget these guys though:
- Social security card
- Canada Revenue Agency (taxes)
- Banking items — personal information, cheques, credit cards, etc.
- Student loan(s)
- Vehicle title
- Voter registration
- Insurance (auto, home, health, etc)
- Utility companies
- Home address labels
- Work related items — payroll, business cards, email signature, etc.
- Email addresses
- Memberships — gym, Costco, Netflix, etc.
Changing your last name back from a married name
If you want to return to using your maiden name after assuming your spouse’s last name, simply follow the same procedure as above but in reverse. We recommend making a list of the accounts you have where you want to update your name to keep you organized, then approach the company or organization to find out what they require to change back. Some may want to see your marriage certificate (which will reflect the name you used at the time of your marriage), or they may want to see your birth certificate; some may want to see both. Continue working through your list until all your accounts have been updated.
