A valid Canadian passport is the most important piece of identification to take with you, no matter where you travel. It is the most recognizable proof of your citizenship and identity accepted in all countries.
Unlike a birth certificate or driver’s licence, a passport can be replaced if it is lost or stolen while on your trip. A passport may also be required for financial or legal transactions such as cashing travellers’ cheques.

How Do I Apply For A Canadian Passport?
- If you are planning on travelling in the near future, it’s a good idea to apply for a passport/visa as soon as you can – preferably three months in advance of your trip.
- All travellers, regardless of age, must have their own passport. Adults can choose to apply for a 5-year or 10-year passport while children (from newborn to 15) can only be issued a passport valid for 5 years.
