You can cancel your vehicle registration in person at any AMA centre. When you come in, there are a few things you'll need to bring:
- Your AMA membership card
- One piece of Government of Alberta-approved photo ID or support document
- The registration, plates and stickers, if available
- The completed letter of authorization form (pdf), if someone is cancelling the vehicle registration on your behalf
If the vehicle registration is in two names, both signatures are needed to cancel the registration. There is a $8.40 fee for cancelling a vehicle registration. For more information, call toll-free 1-866-989-6370.
Why Return Your Licence Plate?
While that collection of licence plates hanging in your garage may make a great design statement, they can also be more work than they’re worth. That’s because licence plates that are not returned to a registry agent stay registered in the owner’s name forever. Yikes. That means any fines or investigations about the licence plate will always start with you — whether you’re the owner or co-owner — and even if you’ve misplaced the plate.
For safety, and to save yourself from headaches down the road, consider returning an unused plate for cancellation.
