After you have registered for your Alberta Health Care card and received it in the mail, you are covered under the Alberta Health Care Insurance plan. *Cue happy dance!* Each time you need to use a medical service in Alberta, you will be asked to show your personal health care card and photo identification (for example, your driver’s licence) to get medical treatment through:
- Physicians (doctors, surgeons, general practitioners)
- Hospital services
- Medical laboratories
- Some insured dental services
- Some coverage for optometrists and podiatrists
It’s important to always carry your Alberta Health Care card. If you require health care services in Alberta and don’t have your Alberta Health Care information available, you may be asked to pay before you can receive these health services, which could be costly.
